Sugarplum Fairies provide us with a sultry blend of low key, essentially indie, electric guitars and breathy, Nicoesque vocals. Silvia Ryder’s voice has a particular sophistication that, on paper at least, would be classed as idiosyncratic with this kind of music. Nevertheless, it works phenomenally well. The chord progressions and strings that grace ‘Fade Away’ evoke ‘Dry/Rid Of Me’ PJ Harvey as well as an unplugged Nirvana with a little Hole thrown in for good measure. ‘Starships and Candy Kings’ is based around the same interesting dynamic and is equally a vintage. This band really do deserve your respect and undivided attention. (DickB)
