Introspective Raincoat Student Music

SUGAR PLUM FAIRIES

Pretty is the first word that comes to mind as I listen to Sugarplum Fairies 2003 release, Introspective Raincoat Student Music. Pretty in a remote, breathy, moody and slightly jaded way. Silvia Ryder's vocals will immediately remind you of Mazzy Star, more so on some songs than others. But since it reminded me of the enjoyment I had listening to Mazzy Star, I went into the album not caring about the resemblance, instead attuned to the overall quality and feel of the album.

The sound is sweet without being sugary or syrupy. The appeal of "Sugar Free" is the lightness of the sound, despite the heaviness of the subject matter. You aren't weighed down by the music, so you're better able to reflect on the candor and sad honesty of the lyrics.

"Sticky Summer" has a great sound, rich with old world charm. The dual male/female vocals are interesting and the pace of the music is almost perfect. This is one of my very favorite cuts on the album.

The music is modern with a twist of old world charm and atmosphere created with e-bow, mandolin, melodica and glockenspiel. It has a tinge of country/folk style, much like Mazzy Star's recordings in the 90's.

The overall tone of the offering is somber, sad and somewhat tragic, but the airy vocals and the wonderful musicianship keep the experience from becoming too dark. You don't have to be in a somber or reflective mood to enjoy it. The buoyancy of the music and the vocals temper the heavier appeal of the lyrics.

Highly recommended to fans of Mazzy Star, Madder Rose and even the Innocence Mission and October Project. I also recommend it to anyone who likes music full of breezy atmosphere and restrained emotion.
